Hillary Trail

Event Type: Health, Fitness, Sports

Event occurs every day effective Monday, 11 January 2010 until Friday, 31 December 2010
from 8:00 a.m.

The Hillary Trail officially opened on 11 January 2010 and is a four day tramp through the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park and along Auckland's west coast.

The walk celebrates New Zealand's best known mountaineer and explorer, Sir Edmund Hillary. It includes overnight says at back-to-basics ARC campgrounds and connects existing regional park tracks to form a 70km wilderness experience.

It takes trampers through the Waitakere Ranges, past Arataki Visitors Centre, Huia,Whatipu, Kareakre, Piha, Anawhata and finishes by either winding north to Muriwai via the Department of Conservation's Te Nega Walkway, or walking through Cascade Kauri Park and onto Swanson. Trampers can also choose a public transport option, beginning and ending their journey in Titirangi.

A booklet about the trail which includes maps and track notes is available from the Arataki Visitors Centre, or for more information and to book a camping space call the ARC on 09 366 2000.

Sections of the trail offer quite difficult terrain with steep climbs, muddy and slippery areas, and different track surfances. There are some unbridged stream crossings and short stretches of road walking.
